HICT S5: Scientific Symposium of the Students, by the Students, for the Students

Have you ever thought of what comes after you graduate?

Do you know how to survive in industry and academia?

Would you like to meet fellow MSc or PhD students in computer science?

The event will provide an opportunity for doctoral and master students to present their current research, as well as meet fellow students. Post-doctoral researchers are also warmly welcome to attend!

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. You are still warmly welcome to participate in the event, but please kindly note that we have reserved food and refreshments only for registered participants.

Key note speakers

Professor Laura Ruotsalainen

Dr. Laura Ruotsalainen is an Associate Professor of Spatiotemporal Data Analysis for Sustainability Science at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Until August 2018 she worked at the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute, Finland, where she led a research group on Sensors and Indoor Navigation. She received her master's degree from the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki in 2003 and doctoral degree in 2013 from the Department of Pervasive Computing, Tampere University of Technology. Her research interests include use of computer vision in navigation, development of sophisticated Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and sensor fusion methods for robust navigation and situational awareness especially in urban areas and for GNSS interference mitigation. Her interests include also development of machine learning algorithms using spatiotemporal data for creating sustainable smart cities.

Dr. Juuso Parkkinen

Dr. Juuso Parkkinen is a data scientist with expertise is in statistical modelling, data wrangling and information visualisation. He has been working as a data scientist at Nightingale Health. Prior to that, he worked as a data scientist at Reaktor (2014-2017), and as a researcher in Aalto Universty and its predecessor, the Helsinki University of Technology. He finished his PhD in the Statistical Machine Learning and Bioinformatics group at Aalto University in 2014. In his thesis he developed and applied probabilistic machine learning methods to biomedical applications.

What is HICT S5?

The Helsinki Doctoral Education Network in Information and Communications Technology Scientific Symposium of the Students, by the Students, for the Students (HICT-S5) is a joint event organized by Aalto University and University of Helsinki doctoral students. The quality of research and education in both HICT universities is world-class and involves over 60 professors and more than 200 doctoral students. The participating units graduate altogether more than 40 new doctors each year.

The event will provide an opportunity for doctoral and master students to present their current research, including work in progress, as well as meet fellow students. Post-doctoral researchers are also warmly welcome to attend!

The event aims to provide a forum to present and receive feedback for novel, groundbreaking, or even controversial ideas. During the symposium, students will meet with reputed international researchers in computer science and communication technology. A "Best Presentation Prize" will be awarded based on potential contribution, novelty, and presentation.

Submit your abstract now! Submission guidelines

Registration is closed.

Doctoral and master students are invited to submit abstracts (maximum 200 words) that describe their current research and potential contributions to computer science and communication technology. At the symposium, the students will present their research topics and attend a poster session. You are invited to submit an abstract for:

  • Oral presentation (8 min + 2 min for questions)
  • Poster presentation (The poster size should be maximum A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm). There is a possibility to print the poster at the Department of Computer Science (Aalto). In case you need this printing service, please mention it in the registration form or contact: hict-admin@hiit.fi
  • Demo presentation (Please note that we have a limited number of screens available and you need to bring your own laptop for your demo.).
  • Or register as participant

Note: your talk doesn't have to be formal! Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

       ● Algorithms and machine learning
       ● Life science informatics
       ● Networks, networked systems and services
       ● Software and service engineering and systems
       ● User centered and creative technologies
       ● Life beyond research such as presentation skills, work-life balance, and job hunting experience

You will receive a confirmation email with further instructions about your presentation.
