What is HICT S5?

The Helsinki Doctoral Education Network in Information and Communications Technology Scientific Symposium of the Students, by the Students, for the Students (HICT-S5) is a joint event organized by Aalto University and University of Helsinki, the two leading universities within Uusimaa area of Finland. The quality of research and education in both HICT universities is world-class and involves over 60 professors and more than 200 doctoral students. The participating units graduate altogether more than 40 new doctors each year.

The event will provide an opportunity for doctoral and master students to present their current research, including work in progress, as well as meet fellow students. It aims to provide a forum to present and receive feedback for novel, groundbreaking, or even controversial ideas. During the symposium, students will meet with reputed international researchers in computer science and communication technology. A "Best Presentation Prize" will be awarded based on potential contribution, novelty, and presentation.

Doctoral and master students are invited to submit abstracts (maximum 200 words) that describe their current research and potential contributions to computer science and communication technology. At the symposium, the students will present their research topics and attend a poster session. You are invited to submit an abstract for:

  • Oral presentation (8 min + 2 min for questions)
  • Poster presentation (The poster size should be maximum A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm). There is a possibility to print the poster at the Department of Computer Science (Aalto). In case you need this printing service, please mention it in the registration form or contact: hict-admin@hiit.fi
  • Demo presentation (Please note that we have a limited number of screens available and you need to bring your own laptop for your demo.).
  • Or register as participant

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

       ● Algorithms and machine learning
       ● Life science informatics
       ● Networks, networked systems and services
       ● Software and service engineering and systems
       ● User centered and creative technologies
       ● Life beyond research such as presentation skills, work-life balance, and job hunting experience
