HICT 1-day workshop: poster presentation skills (1 ECTS)

Did you get your poster accepted for a conference next summer? How to communicate scientific results effectively with a poster presentation?

In case you have ever wondered about these kinds of questions, this is your chance to learn more and meet other doctoral students from Aalto and the University of Helsinki!

The Helsinki Doctoral Education Network in Information and Communications Technology (HICT) organizes a science communication workshop for HICT doctoral students in Aalto University and the University of Helsinki. The workshop is sponsored by HIIT.

Kaskas Media is a Finnish company specialized in science communication training for researchers. HICT’s 1-day workshop will cover a set of topics focusing on poster presentation skills. The training builds around pre-assignments, teaching sessions, and tasks that the students will complete together with two teachers from Kaskas Media.

When: Monday 28.5.2018, 9:00-16:00

Where: Otaniemi, CS building (Konemiehentie 2), seminar room T3

Registration: Please, register through this link no later than 1.5. bit.ly/HICTposter2018

Workshop contents: 1-day intensive training (including free lunch)

The training consists of a pre-assignment and 1-day intensive training with two sessions. Students will be credited 1 ECTS if they complete all required tasks and participate in both teaching sessions. Note! Participants will also be expected to present their research poster in public at a further HICT or HIIT event (e.g. in the upcoming HICT Summit in autumn 2018).

Pre-assignment: You will receive full instructions for the pre-assignment during the first weeks of May. The pre-assignment will include 1) filling in a small questionnaire and 2) preparation of a scientific poster. All participants will prepare a scientific poster that describes their own research.  Print your poster and bring it with you to the training. You can prepare a completely new poster or you can edit your old ready-made poster, if you wish. There is also a possibility to print out your poster for the training at the CS department (Aalto). In case you wish to do so, please contact Aija Kukkala (firstname.lastname (AT) aalto.fi) no later than 23.5.2018.

Training schedule

9.00-11.30 Introduction: How to present your own research with a poster? How do I visualize my research effectively with a poster? How can I pitch about my research in a convincing and inspiring way in front of a poster? This session includes tips for making effective scientific posters.

11.30-12.30 Lunch (free of charge)

12.30-15.30 Poster presentation rehearsals. This part of the training includes a simulation of a conference poster session. All participants will have a chance to present their poster and they will get feedback from their peers and the teachers.
