HICT workshop: Introduction to research presentation skills and stakeholder interaction (1 ECTS)

Fri, 01.11.2019

Who needs and is interested in research information? How to communicate your research results to wider public? How to interact with different stakeholders? How to present your research to different audiences?

This is your chance to learn to present your research and interact with stakeholders, and meet other doctoral students and researchers from Aalto and the University of Helsinki!

HICT, the Helsinki Doctoral Education Network in Information and Communications Technology, organizes a science communication workshop for HICT doctoral students and researchers in Aalto University and the University of Helsinki.

The training consists of one pre-assignment and workshop including tasks that the students will complete together with two coaches from Kaskas Media, a Finnish company specialized in science communication training for researchers. Students will be credited 1 ECTS if they participate in the workshop day and complete the pre-assignment.

The workshop day consists of two parts. The morning part focuses on general ideas and practices of stakeholder interaction and collaboration. In the afternoon, the focus shifts to research presentations. You will get a chance to practice your own research speech and get feedback from the teachers. You will get more insight at least to the following things during this training:

  • Who are common stakeholders in academic research? You will also learn how to identify relevant and potential stakeholders for your own research topic.
  • What is the structure and content of a clear and understandable speech presentation?
  • How can I speak about my research in an inspiring way?
  • How to direct my presentation especially to non-academic audience?

When: 4th of December, 2019 at 9.00-16.00 (including a lunch break. HICT will offer a free buffet lunch for participants.)

Where: Otaniemi, CS building (Konemiehentie 2), seminar room T5

Pre-assignment: Participants will plan their next (real or imaginary) short speech presentation, whichis directed to decision-makers. We will use a questionnaire online for planning purposes. More instructions on the pre-assignment will be sent after registration.

Registration: Please, register through this link by November 25, 2019.

The number of participants is limited to 20 and seats are filled in the order of registrations received. Priority will be given to HICT doctoral students (your supervisor needs to be a HICT supervising professor). Postdoctoral researchers and other researchers are welcome to attend if seats are available. You will receive a confirmation email about your registration on November 26. Participation (including lunch) is free of charge, but please note that registration is binding. In case you want to cancel your registration, please contact coordinator Noora Suominen de Rios (email: firstname.lastname@aalto.fi) as soon as possible.
